In defense of Zoomers
Try to read it without connecting too much to the existing patterns of intergenerational strife like what boomers have it better than millennials have it worse. I want you to read it and adapt it to your local situation, because it might be a bit different in each country, but some of that vibe still present.
You may complain that they are lazy, do not want to work, do not want to do anything, like everything bad, and they are tired real quick, and they hate your offices and so on, and they’re generally lazy pieces of shit, that kind of vibe.
Okay, somebody who is a zoomer may just ask you that since your time around 40, 30, even 20 years has passed depending on the period. And we ask you why the hell life did not improve enough so my life is now easier?
You had a lot of time to fix the economy, you had a lot of tech progress, you had pricks sitting in the government spreading tyranny and bureaucracy to finally go and fix everything up.
And suddenly you expect us to work and continue to live the so-called hard life as you had yourself.
Cause if it’s not that, then what the hell have you been doing for the last 30 years? Where are the results of your progress here? What you’ve been working on?!
Regardless of whatever the current generation is, the next one may ask the same question.
So the current ones may ask if there has not been much progress and they expect me to work hard, then what’s the fucking point? To me, to exert myself right here, when I have no guarantee what future will be easier, better and all that, neither for me nor for my offspring.
Not any visible change anyone can hope to make here, where all seems ruined already…
Okay, so how did we arrive here? Somebody in the past of course did something, yeah?
Some may say that they are too unaware of all this situation, that the poor boomers were just doing their thing in the past and everyone else was doing their own thing without thinking much about the future and all that.
Well, that’s also full of excuses. They had time to fix it. They did vote for someone. Election cycle after election cycle, they voted for someone who kept the status quo rather than trying to improve anything. They chose the comfort of the status quo over the hard work of correction.
Also, I would be lying when saying that progress did not happen. It definitely happened.
It just spread very unevenly and every bit of progress we got was captured only those at the top.
It just got hoarded by the same people at the top before it could rich anyone else.
And who allowed that? Ones who voted before…
They watched inequality grow in real time and did nothing.
All this progress captured by top percent was not any kind of instant. It was not like one year you had equality and another you had none. That has been an ongoing creep over and over because the system was not optimizing for any kind of quality in the first place.
They didn’t want to go after the rich because they were convinced they could become rich themselves. The system sold them the belief that they’d be next – so they didn’t tear it down or do anything at all, they just waited for their turn (by doing nothing, lol?).
What not to do.
Your first instinct here would be to just smack the rich, hang them on the walls, take the money and share with everyone.
Bad idea, because they are needed for economy. They are needed, because if you go after them, they can just leave. They have enough power to just leave to a better place. Here is the following example where we tried to do it and got our economy hurt.
Nor should you go vote for left, who is promising you the exact same thing. They gonna go after the rich, make them pay, make them be responsible, make them do a social contract and all that blah blah blah. Yet think about who was sitting in your power in exact last 30 years. The fucking lefties! And they already proved that they did really nothing to make things better. Not only they did not fix the economy, they are currently front-running for the governmental oppression.
Then you find out quickly what you need to have governmental structure to do all that, some kind of redistribution system to be fair and efficient.
And you grew the monster back again. which again gets captured by some ‘elites’. Which will be very soon back to oppressing you again.
What to do instead.
Instead you should look upon who already have it easy now. ones who have capital, ones who have property, ones who have a house, ones who have a share in a company they are working in. All this stuff that makes their life easy also sets them free and grants them independence.
I want this for you too.
You need capital enough to be free. Not top CEO money – just enough to not be dependent on next month’s paycheck.
That threshold is lower than you think.
But don’t fall for the same dream they sold the previous generation. Don’t chase becoming one of them – unless really prepared to also face all the difficulty.
That’s exactly what kept them on the hamster wheel – convinced they’d be next, that they can do it, so they never even tried to change anything or start to replicate actual rich habits.
You might not get as rich as them, but you should demand that you have the same lifestyle, that you are equal to them.
Imagine if you had a house, had a car, had a capital gate getting you revenue. Where you work you have shares of your company. Your decisions are matter, you are important, you are a shareholder.
You have another house that you rent away, which covers all your current expenses.
You have a fat broker account where you invest in the economy at once and benefit from any happy event when it grows.
You go to your job not because you need to survive, but because you like doing things, possibly, and you want to have extra money for actual things to enjoy and potentially to pass on downward in the future.
All of this requires you to do one thing. To start caring about your freedom.
That means, to value the independence they have. That means to start demanding the same level as they have.
Instead of accepting salary, demand for shared ownership of a company.
Find out any laws that prevent cheap and affordable housing for everyone and strike them down.
Find out how you have endless monopolies growing and growing, thus not allowing a more healthy market.
Demand that the taxes you pay are instead kept at your pocket so you can think of how you can secure your future yourself.
…and many more.
Half of it is you personally start respecting yourself and demanding what you are allowed and capable of getting into better economic conditions by having capital and all that.
Another part is fixing broken parts in a system, what makes such capital acquisition practically impossible for an average worker.
Remember how boomers had it all? What on the average salary they could buy a house, go to college and all that.
(using that as a classic example – find your local analogue – im sure there are plenty)
Partially they were just lucky, and also they respected themselves to not allow everything to slide down.
They demanded until they got theirs.
Then they did not care to demand for next gens to have it better.
Also, the boomers are not local here. It’s the millennials and X-ers who had hard time and now complaining what you are not following in their steps. When in fact they are just the same victims as you are.
You should throw away any guilt they try to impose on you – for not working hard enough, for not doing enough, for not being as a tryhard as they are. They are wrong.
Life is supposed to be easier. Everything is supposed to be easier.
You are supposed to work less and at the place you enjoy – not just being forced to survive.
You are supposed to have an easier time than whatever they had imagined.
And future generations are supposed to have it even better.
Progress is the default direction of civilization. Each next decade we have it better.
It always that the technological progress makes our lives better, but the politicians, establishment and whoever is already in power are trying to stop and hoard it for themselves.
If you let them convince you that nothing is supposed to change – that the effort you have to exert should stay constant – then everything becomes futile.
You are not lazy. You are the first generation honest enough to say out loud that the deal was bad.
Now go make a better one, for everyone.
